Sticking With Healthy Plans While on Vacation

When you get ready for your next vacation, one thing you may do, is try and lose some weight so you can fit into that bathing suit you love.  Once you have achieved your weight loss goal, you want to do everything you can to make sure that it stays off.  There are ways, even while on vacation, that you can eat healthy and keep the weight off.

Flight:

You can begin eating healthy for your vacation before you take the flight out.  By eating a healthy meal before you even get to the airport, you will not be hungry and will not be tempted to eat unhealthy foods.  You could also pack some snacks for the flight that are better for you, such as dried fruit or nuts.  If you have a layover on your flight and are hungry, look for a deli or restaurant that offers healthy foods, such as fruits, salads, or baked chicken.

While you are hanging out in the airport waiting for your flight, it is a good idea to walk around and see what the airport has to offer rather than just sitting and waiting for your flight.  It would be good to use the stairs and carry your luggage rather than the escalator and wheeling your bags.  These are both great ways to get some exercise before you leave.

Choosing a Hotel:

When you are looking for a hotel, there are some tips to finding one that will give you what you need to stick to your healthy plan. Finding the right hotel is the most important aspect of maintaining a healthy lifestyle away from home. Consumer reviews seem to be the best form of information as they provide unbiased and valuable information. I was doing research for a recent trip and found a great site that listed the Las Vegas hotels I was looking at along with reviews regarding each ones amenities, restaurants, and things to do. This proved extremely valuable and has made it so much easier to prepare! Look for a hotel that has a fitness center.  This will allow you the space and equipment necessary to keep up with your exercise routine.  Often times if a hotel has a restaurant, they will have a menu posted or will give you an idea of the types of food they serve.  You will then be able to choose a hotel with a restaurant that offers healthy food choices.

At Your Hotel:

Once you arrive at the hotel and get settled in, you may consider heading out to a local market and picking up some healthy snacks.  If you have them in the room, you will have something to snack on when you have a craving.  If there is a minibar within the room, you should refuse the key.  This will prevent you from splurging when you have an urge to.  You could consider bringing a small crockpot with you in order to make a healthy meal in the room, such as chicken, rice, and vegetables.  If you order from room service, be clear in the way you would like your food prepared.

Continental breakfasts are a great way to stick with your healthy eating.  There are typically fresh fruits for you to enjoy.

Restaurants

When you are looking for a restaurant to eat at, take time to determine the type of food that is prepared and the way it is prepared.  It is best to stick with foods that are baked, boiled, broiled, fat free, fresh, light, and whole grain.  Some things you want to stay away from are basted, battered, breaded, buttered, country style, creamy, fried, and smothered.  Try to add vegetables as your side as often as possible. The key to being at a restaurant is to eat in moderation. Don’t just clean your plate because it is in front of you. Acknowledge that your body is telling you that you are full and ask for a box.

While these tips may seem like no brainers, travelers without thinking often overlook them. Ensuring that you follow these ideas will leave you feeling just as fresh when you get home as you did when you left.

Seems like quite a strict list. It’s VACATION! It’s a time to relax and enjoy yourself – not stress about counting calories and getting in every extra step of exercise. I take a much more moderate view of health when I’m on vacation and I think it makes me a much happier person. And I would never ever put a crockpot in my suitcase!

  2. Sometimes it’s so hard to eat healthy on vacation, but these are some great tips. Thanks!

  3. A hotel with a gym or a pool is a must for me! When I wasn’t dealing with a knee injury, though, I loved going for runs on vacation. Some of my happiest vacation memories are running along the beach in Kona and swimming in the ocean!
