This weekend my family and I decided to take advantage of the nice weather and take a trip up to Smolak Farms for some good ole’ September apple picking. I love all fruits but I must admit that apples do hold a special place in my heart. As you can probably guess, (because of the title of this blog) I go through certain food phases all the time. For the past month, I’m pretty sure I’ve had an apple a day, everyday. You know what they say, “an apple a day, keeps the doctor away!” Not such a bad addiction if I do say so myself!
I guess a lot of people had the same idea as us because the parking lot was PACKED! Seriously, it seemed like there were never ending rows of cars! Oh well, crowds don’t stop me (especially when apples are involved) !
Before we even made our way to the apple trees, it was necessary to stop for something sweet. Matteo and I shared a lemon slush, which was just perfect. Not too sweet and not too tangy, just the way I like it!
On the trail that led to the apple trees, we past tomatoes, and a few other fruits too. We thought about stopping to pick some, but our minds were solely focused on the main goal-APPLES!
Finally, we reached the apple trees and I was all business. Finding the perfect apple is hard work! Some are bruised, broken, not ripe enough or homes for worms and other insects! I wouldn’t want someone to invade my house, so I just left those be.
At last, I found it, the perfect Macintosh apple! I simply could not wait to taste it! It was juicy and sweet, but not too sweet. ABSOLUTELY DELISH There is just something I love about eating the food I hand picked or grew myself. It makes me appreciate our local farmers and their everyday hard work. Maybe I should plant an apple tree in my backyard so I don’t have to drive and pay for this feeling? Its a thought…
Before we knew it, all of our baskets were filled with a large collection of various types of apples.
Thank God I’ve got someone big and strong to help me carry these babies home! Otherwise, I would have probably walked out with less than ten or so (definitely not enough for all the apple desserts I have in mind).
What a successful day! Yay for apple picking!
What kinds of fruits/vegetables do you like to pick?
